Chair’s Welcome Message

On behalf of the entire faculty, staff and students of the Department of Agriculture, I want to personally welcome you to Virginia State University!

More importantly, I want to take a moment to thank you for giving us an opportunity to share with you many reasons why attending VSU and becoming our student in the Department of Agriculture is an excellent choice.

You can now become a member of our “Department of Ag” family!

Our department has a group of dedicated faculty who take time to meet and guide our students throughout their entire educational career. Faculty at the Department of Agriculture have a long history and tradition of getting to know our students on a personal level, mentor students throughout their coursework, externships, internships, all kinds of experiential learning opportunities, entry level careers and graduate school programs. Our research scientists and extension specialists also take pride in providing students with experiential learning opportunities in our MT Carter research station and our 416 acre research and teaching (Randolph) farm, to prepare them for life beyond the walls of an academic institution.

Our ultimate goal is to prepare you for the career of a lifetime! As a graduate of the Department of Agriculture you will become part of an elite and very successful body of alumni. The students who have come before you have put their VSU degree to work and continue to achieve success. Our alumni like Dr. Woodrow Knight and Ms Brenda Finch reached the pinnacle of their professional careers. Dr. Knight is now the owner and CEO of Regulatory Strategies LLC after 35 years of service with the FDA. When asked about his experience in the Department, Dr. Knight said:

“…..I went to Virginia State University with nothing and left Virginia State with a great education and a most valuable B.S. degree. VSU was very, very good to me. In fact I met my wife of 48 years while at VSU”

Also, Ms Brenda Finch, was until her retirement, the Vice President, Federal Customer Care, Verizon Business Services. On her experience in our program, Ms Finch had this to say:

"Virginia State University exposed me to the world.  As a small town farm girl, my imagination soared at VSU.  I gained knowledge, skills, confidence--all the attributes I needed to succeed.  As a result, after 34 years, I retired as a Vice-President from Verizon Communications--then a Fortune 13 company."

More recent alumni include Ms. Keisha Tatem, the first female State Conservationist for USDA-NRCS in Arizona, and Dr. Robert Holland, Assistant Director USDA-NIFA Institute of Food Safety and Nutrition. We are proud of our alumni and the rich legacy of success that we have. We are also confident that a degree from our program is the key you need to unlock your dreams, join our growing long list of successful alumni and become a valuable citizen of the global community.

We look forward to seeing you in Owens Hall very soon!
